Oh nooo! My message disappeared too! I forgot to copy it! *sigh* Ok, here we go again

So, hi everybody!

Julian and I know Jackson and Soili already (Hi guys! ). We live in Bristol and we have a flat in St Pauls/Montpelier. Unfortunately, it's way too expensive for the size, it's too small anyway and it's not green at all. So, we have been thinking about a self-built house (it helps to know Jackson and to know that it's achievable!). We are not as ready as Selim seems to be, I think we are in a more similar situation as Soili, but we're keen to meet and make it happen!

There are two difficulties in our situation which we will have to find a solution for (apart from the usual challenges that everybody will go through: the time, the land, the skills, etc.): one is that we already have a mortgage and we don't know what the options will be for us - selling the flat before buying the land and paying for the house (then, where will we live?), paying for two mortgages while-we-build (it'd be too much money a month and the bank won't give us another one anyway.) or something else... The other tricky bit is that we are both freelance and it's the usual dilemma: when we have the money, we don't have the time and vice-versa. Also, sometimes one of us (or both...) has to leave Bristol for work and it can be anywhere in Britain or abroad and for substantial periods of time. Also it's always pretty unexpected. Hard to plan anything in that case.
We'll find a way!

The other thing worth mentioning here is that we are also thinking about kit eco-houses amongst other ways. This is something Soili might be interested to as well, if time is an issue. Does anyone know about them? Do you have an opinion on how good or bad they are? I guess the quality depends on the company too. It's a matter of doing the research.

Anyway, if you guys are meeting up again some day, we would love to join the discussion!

Hi all, I have a house in Frome ( near Bath ) with a rather large mortgage. I'm interested in finding people to self build some co-housing in Frome. When I sell my house I would ideally invest the money in a much more sustainable eco home that was also part of a community. Frome has vast quantities of building development going on at the moment. I wonder if anyone has any ideas on how to find land and start this ball rolling or if it's too problematic and I'm better off moving to Bristol and getting involved with the project there?
Also there's a community centre near where I live with a garden that the charity that I work for, Somerset Community Food, has agreed to develop as an eco community garden. Any one out there able to offer workshops in developing a community eco garden? We need a cabin of sorts there too. Small amounts of money available.

Hi Becky
Welcome to the site. Frome is a great place, and I'm sure it will be possible to find some land and get a project going in or around Frome.

You could print up some of the leaflets on the resources page, and put them up and around to see if there are others in the area interested.

We could meet up at some point to talk about ideas, as I am often in Frome.
Away until 12th May, so sometime after that.

Nice one
Jackson

Bristol eco-housing co-op died? 3 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
What happened to the Bristol eco-housing co-op? A few months ago they found a superb site with the support of the Council. It was East of the Feeder canal on the riverside. I tried searching for their website but its down. Perhaps they folded? See: http://www.cooperatives-uk.coop/News/newsArchive/2007/co-housingBristol

Hi Steve

Been away for a few weeks and out of the loop.
Bristol co-housing is still going, and I think they are looking to see if there is any space in the Elizebeth Shaw chocolate factory.

Whats the site at the end of the feeder? Sounds good, fancy showing me sometime, or do you know the location....do ya wanna google earth it?

Hi Jax

I think Vince showed it me; one of these three locations adjacent to the river:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=111842932223714973168.0000011205472ef28ac29&ll=51.452158,-2.560099&spn=0.002193,0.005858&t=h&z=18 - the enclosed space left of Marsh Lane or:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=111842932223714973168.0000011205472ef28ac29&ll=51.45524,-2.546071&spn=0.002119,0.005858&t=h&z=18 - again adjacent river, centre of image. Or:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=111842932223714973168.0000011205472ef28ac29&ll=51.450863,-2.567499&spn=0.001097,0.002929&t=h&z=19

The links don't paste in properly - make sure to copy all of each before pasting.

I've emailed Vince but he doesn't reply.
